Volkswagen Transporter 2021 – Only Leave vehicle in position P

Customer Complaint

The customer reports that the vehicle displays a dashboard warning instructing to “only leave vehicle in position P.” The warning remains consistently present. The workshop identified fault code B200049, which would not clear despite initial diagnostic actions.

Initial Diagnostics

  • Diagnostic scan performed – fault code B200049 stored.
  • Additional fault information indicated issues related to the gear selector unit.
  • All wiring to/from the selector assembly was inspected:
  • No damage, corrosion, or intermittent continuity faults were found.
  • Connectors were clean and secure.

Repairs Attempted

The gear shift unit (selector assembly) was replaced due to:

  • Previous stored selector-related fault codes.
  • Known failure rate of the component.
  • Wiring checked and tested OK between selector lever and TCM

After replacement, the system was re-scanned, but B200049 remained active and could not be cleared.

Technical Support Consultation

Coles Automotive contacted Opus IVS and spoke to Jason, one of OPUS ivs’s VW Master Technicians, for further guidance.

Expert Recommendation:

Jason advised that following the replacement of the gear shift unit, the Volkswagen system may require a drive cycle/adaptation learning procedure before the TCM (Transmission Control Module) will clear the DTC.

Instruction Provided:

  • Road test the vehicle at over 30 mph
  • Maintain steady driving for several minutes to allow the module to perform internal self-checks
  • After this drive cycle, reattempt fault-code clearing

This matches known Volkswagen TCM behaviour, where certain selector and plausibility faults are only cleared once the module detects movement and confirms correct signal correlation from the new selector unit.

Next Steps / Expected Outcome

    1. Conduct the recommended road test above 30 mph.
    2. Re-scan and attempt to clear fault code B200049.

Conclusion

Based on guidance from the VW Master Technician and established Volkswagen diagnostic practices, the persistent B200049 fault after gear selector replacement is likely due to the module requiring a drive cycle to validate the new component. The recommended road test should allow the system to complete this self-learning process and permit successful clearing of the fault.
