Secure Gateway (SGW) — What It Is & Why It Matters
Modern vehicles are becoming increasingly software-driven and internally networked. To protect their internal networks and prevent unauthorised access or malicious intrusion, many OEMs now incorporate a Secure Gateway Module (SGW). Functioning like a firewall, the SGW sits between the vehicle’s diagnostic port and the internal control modules, restricting untrusted control commands.
Because SGW may block critical actions such as module resets, calibrations, or actuator commands, diagnostic tools must prove their legitimacy (via credentials and authentication) before advanced operations are allowed. This has made SGW support a necessity for servicing many late-model vehicles.
SGW in the Marketplace: OEMs & Aftermarket Diagnostic Tools
FCA / Stellantis: Began implementing a secure gateway module (SGW) around the 2018 model year for some vehicles and rolled it out to cover all vehicles in 2019. Functions such as clearing DTCs, all bi-directional functions (including calibrations, relearns, actuations, and adjustments), and other related operations require an approved unlock.
